'THE KNOWLEDGE OF HEALING‘ is the first full-length film dealing extensively with Tibetan Medicine, one of the world's most highly developed medical systems. The original book of medicine, the ‘Gyüschi’ or ‘The Knowledge of Healing’, dates back to the 12th century. Tibetan medicine is based on a holistic principle and
treats both physical and spiritual aspects. The medications used comprise herbs, roots, minerals, etc. Successes have been achieved with chronic diseases that are regarded as incurablein the West. This film was shot in three different locations. At each location we are guided by one of the leading characters with their ‘patients’. Dharamsala, in the Himalayan foothills of northern India, is the seat of the exiled Tibetan government. Here we are introduced by Dr. Tenzin Choedrak to Tibetan medicine, and H.H. Tenzin Gyatso,14th Dalai Lama, explains to us the full meaning of health. In Ulan-Ude and the Buryatia steppe region of northern Mongolia, we witness long-term treatment of chronic illnesses by the Tibetan doctor Chimit-Dorzhi Dugarov. In Switzerland, Vienna and Jerusalem the possibilities of applying natural Tibetan medicine in the West are being studied. We also hear about the latest scientific investigations into the healing properties of Tibetan medications, first instigated by Karl Lutz, a Swiss pharmaceuticals merchant who died in 1995. It was Karl Lutz who started industrial production of Tibetan medications in the West, leading to some astonishing cases of healing.
